You Weren't Lit to Stay Hidden — Sermon Recap | The Bridge Church Hampton, VA

Nobody lights a lamp and shoves it under a bowl.
It sounds obvious when Jesus says it. Of course you don't. That would defeat the whole point. But for a lot of followers of Jesus — people who have genuinely been set on fire by God — that's exactly what's happening. The light is real. It's just not going anywhere.
That was the challenge at the center of this week's message at The Bridge Church in Hampton, VA, as Brian Ayers continued our Red Hot series with a word from Matthew 5:14–16 titled "You Weren't Lit to Stay Hidden."
What Jesus Said About Who You Are
The passage opens with one of the boldest identity statements in the Sermon on the Mount: "You are the light of the world."
Not "you could be" or "you should try to be." You are. It's a declaration, not a suggestion. Jesus isn't describing a spiritual goal to work toward — He's telling His followers who they already are because of who He is. The light in you isn't something you manufactured. It came from Him. And because it came from Him, hiding it isn't humility. It's waste.
A city on a hill can't be hidden. A lamp is meant to give light to everyone in the house. Both images say the same thing: visibility is the point.
The Temptation to Go Underground
So why do so many of us live like our faith is a secret?
The pressure is real. Speaking up at work feels risky. Standing for something when everyone around you stands for something else takes courage. It's easier to keep your head down, blend in, and save the God-talk for Sunday morning.
But Jesus doesn't describe a faith that hides as a safe faith — He describes it as a useless one. A lamp under a bowl doesn't protect the light. It just prevents it from doing what it was made to do.
Being red hot for God isn't just about your personal spiritual temperature. It's about what that heat and light produce in the people and places around you. If the fire stays contained, it isn't really serving its purpose.
Let Your Light Shine — But Notice Why
The call in verse 16 is clear: "Let your light shine before others." But the reason Jesus gives is worth slowing down on. He doesn't say let it shine so people will think well of you, or so your church will grow, or so you'll feel good about yourself.
He says: "that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
The goal isn't attention. It's attribution. When people see a life genuinely shaped by the love of Jesus — the generosity, the forgiveness, the steadiness under pressure, the care for people nobody else cares about — the question that should come to mind is: where does that come from?
That's the opening. That's the moment the light does its work.
Practical Faithfulness in Hampton Roads
This message wasn't a call to stand on a corner and shout. It was a call to stop hiding an ordinary life that has been made extraordinary by God.
In your neighborhood. At your job. In your family. In the way you treat the server, the difficult coworker, the neighbor you've been avoiding. You are already placed somewhere. The question is whether the light in you is reaching the people in the room.
You weren't lit to stay hidden. The fire God put in you was always meant to go somewhere.
