Guest preacher Pastor Kirk T. Houston continued our Heatwave series with a word rooted in Exodus 3, delivering a sermon titled "When You Can't, God Will." The message was simple, direct, and exactly what this room needed to hear.
The Context: 400 Years of Bondage
In Exodus 3, the children of Israel had been enslaved in Egypt for 400 years. They couldn't free themselves. There was no political solution, no uprising that was going to work. They were stuck. But the Bible says that in the process of time, the people cried out — and God heard them.
Exodus 2 tells us that God heard their groaning, remembered His covenant, and was concerned about them. That detail matters. God didn't just hear the noise — He was moved by it. And that same God, Pastor Kirk reminded us, hears you today.
"Whatever prayer, you can whisper a prayer and God can hear you. You can be in the lowest place and God will hear."
When You Can't, God Will Get Involved
God's response to Israel's cry wasn't sympathy from a distance. He called Moses and said, "I will stretch out my hand." Not Moses' hand. Not Pharaoh's hand. Not any human hand. God's hand — the one that carved out valleys, molded mountains, and formed every life in that room.
Pastor Kirk put it plainly: the only hand that could compel Pharaoh was one stronger than his. And in every generation, the only hand strong enough to turn what we're facing is the hand of God.
This is the first truth of the message: God will get involved. He doesn't watch from a distance. He steps into your situation.
When You Can't, God Will Do the Impossible
Here's the thing about God — He doesn't show up to do what you can already handle. He moves when you hit your limit. When your strength runs out, when your wisdom falls short, when your resources are gone — that's when He shows out.
Pastor Kirk walked through Scripture after Scripture to prove the point. Sarah, barren her whole life, bearing a child at 90. Joseph, thrown in a pit by his own brothers, ending up second in command over all of Egypt. The Red Sea parting. Walls falling at Jericho. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walking out of a furnace without so much as the smell of smoke on them.
"You serve a God who can take little and turn it into much. You serve a God who can take dead things and bring them back to life."
Every time God showed up in Scripture, He did something that nobody in the room could have done on their own. That's not a coincidence — that's His pattern. And it's the same God working on your behalf right now.
When You Can't, God Will Invest in Your Future
The third point is the one that often gets missed. When God delivered Israel out of Egypt, He didn't just open the door and say "good luck." He sent them out with silver, gold, and clothing — provision for the wilderness ahead. He equipped them for the next season before they even arrived in it.
For those of us who follow Jesus, that investment looks like the Holy Spirit — a Comforter, a Counselor, a source of power that sustains us through every season until we reach the place God has prepared for us.
"Eyes haven't seen, ears haven't heard, neither has it entered into the hearts of man what God has in store for you."
Whatever God is bringing you out of, He's also preparing you for what comes next. He never brings us out empty-handed.
The Takeaway
Pastor Kirk closed with a prayer that said it better than any recap can:
"We don't have the power. But your word says in our weakness, your strength is made perfect. So we're leaning on you today."
If you're in something right now that feels too big — a health diagnosis, a broken marriage, a financial hole you can't climb out of, a battle in your mind that won't let up — this message is for you. Cry out to the Lord. He hears you. He sees you. He's concerned about you.
And when you can't, God will.
